To whom it may concern,
This letter is in regard to a new patient of ours that we have agreed to assist here at Riley Hospital for Children. The patient is Vasili Latachilin from St. Petersburg, Russia.
Vasili is a four year old young man with a congenital heart defect known as Aortic Stenosis. Aortic Stenosis is a narrowing of the aortic valve site that prevents normal flow from the left ventricle of the heart and impedes proper oxygenation to the body. He has had one previous open heart procedure in Russia that was unsuccessful in correcting the problem. He now needs a second open heart surgical procedure called a "Ross" to replace his aortic valve. However, this procedure Is not currently offered in Russia. Vasili absolutely does need a procedure to repair this valve or his condition may progress to a life threatening, irreparable defect. However, at this current time, he should be fine to endure the commercial airline flight without any complications. He is not currently on any medical assist devices such as oxygen.
I have agreed to accept Vasili as our patient. Services rendered by the Cardiothoracic program here will be donated free of charge. Likewise, the valve necessary for his operation has been donated by the Cryolife Company. The family is making a small donation to the hospital for their care. Their lodging will be covered by the Rotarian Service Club. It is my understanding that the one missing piece to accomplish Vasili's operation is transportation to Indiana for the mother and the child.
We are hoping that the Latachilln's will arrive hare in Indiana on or before July 26"', 1998. His pre-operative work up will begin immediately and his surgery is scheduled for July 31"', 1998. We anticipate that he will do well and be able to return to Russia at about six to eight weeks post operatively.
Should you have any other questions or concerns about this patient and their needs, please do not hesitate to contact our Clinical Coordinator, Becky Clark. R.N. at (317) 278-2854. She will be happy to assist you and the Latachilin family.
I am hopeful that one of the major airlines can assist this child with their flight arrangements so that we may all aid this child to remain healthy and continue to have a good life. Thank you in advance for your help and assistance.
Sincerely,

Dr. John W. Brown
